Space: Part 2/3
Welcome to the second part of a five part series on space. Last edition, we covered the history of the universe and stuff like that. Well this week, I want to focus on "dark" and "black" things. These included dark matter, dark energy, and black holes. No one knows anything on these weird occurrences. NASA has just started to fund programs that are researching this stuff. Anything said about this stuff is just theories, just like the origin of the universe. But what little we know is beyond mind blowing. Mostly, we have recently just learned about dark matter, and a lot of that in the past few days. A sensor used to detect dark matter was recently installed on the ISS and has given a lot of insight to cosmologists. And before I quit with that, you may be wondering what dark matter is. Well basically, I don't know. I've read a couple articles and they have told me one thing: Dark matter and dark energy is basically matter and energy in places in the universe where there is nothing. It helps astronomers comprehend the expansion of space. Now to the more interesting part, black holes. Again, we know very little about them. What we do know is that a star 4x the size of the sun could fit in a black hole the diameter of New York City. That's pretty impressive for something that big. Just imagine hundreds of Earth's could fit into the sun, and then times that by 4. And then shrinking that to the diameter of New York City. And these things will never stop. They may eventually close up, which we have no idea if they do that, or just consume everything including each other. If it eats something large then it's going to become even more powerful. And to make it worse nothing that we know if can escape, including light. So that makes it very hard to observe. A really close black hole is the center of the Whirlpool Galaxy, some billion miles away from us. If you look it up, you just might be amazed at the picture.Like I said, no one knows anything about this subject. It's all theories. And this even includes myself. I am not liable for anything related to the article. I cannot be held legally responsible for any opinions. By reading/listening to this article you agree to not hold the author accountable by any means for this article. The article is soley the opinions of the author and not the STEM class in any way. What's in the next article?The next article will be parts 3 & 4.3 will cover life in outer space and anything related to that.4 will shed light on space travel.
The Avengers Review
by: Robert Malizia
Hello, Robert Malizia here, with your bi-weekly movie review! This week, I will be reviewing The Avengers. The Avengers is an action, comedy, and superhero genre movie. The director was Joss Whedon, who was famous for directing Firefly, Serenity, and Dollhouse. The Avengers was made in 2012 and was rated PG-13.
In Marvel’s The Avengers, there is a lot of fighting, due to the fact that the evil Loki from the movie Thor has made a portal to earth and is using aliens to take over the world. To fight back, a secret agency gathers 6 superheroes that would team up and defeat Loki. The superheroes were Iron Man, The Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Captain America, and none other than Thor himself. Who will win? Will Loki claim the Earth, or will the Avengers assemble to defeat all the aliens and Loki? Find out in Marvel’s The Avengers!
It was a big success due to it bringing $1,511,757,910 on just a $220 million dollar budget. I think that The Avengers is a great movie for the whole family to watch. You can own it on Blue Ray or DVD now, or, like my family does, wait till it comes to Redbox and rent it for one night for just $1. This movie should get a 6 out of 5, but I will just give it a 5 out of 5, so my other reviews are in balance.

Farm Dumps About 6,000 Pigs
Autumn Cox
In Hong Kong on March 13, a farm admitted to throwing all his 6000 pig bloated carcasses in the Huangpu River. Some of the pigs had suffered cruel abuse from harsh weather and others had diseases. The farmers sold some of the diseased pigs to other local farmers and they were arrested for selling diseased meat. The town needed to get the carcasses out of the water, so they safely got all the carcasses they could find out of the river. They still expected to find more though.
Some local fishermen were out fishing and kept reeling in bruised beaten pigs and quickly alerted residence. "There were dead pigs all around and they really stunk," one local resident told CNN, "Of course, we're worried, but what can you do about it? It's water that we have to drink and use." The pigs leak body fluids, including blood, that pollutes the water. They think that if the water treatment is successful, then it should be drinkable in a while.

What Are We Doing In S.T.E.M?
By: Sam Hofmann
Right now, we are making and programming robots using VEX kits. Students had to make test beds, which are a mish-mosh of parts, to test out our programming skills. We had to make programs such as this one to turn on the the left motors and such. Here is one of the programs
task main ()
{startmotor (leftmotor , 20) ;
wait (2) ;
stopmotor (leftmotor) ;
turnLEDon (green) ;
wait (5) ;
turnLEDoff (green) ;
}
This is a simple program that we had to make. Some of the other programs that we made could start and stop one motor. As soon as that stopped, the next motor starts.
Programming is like learning another language and there are so many types of programming languages. Even if you just learn one, it will help you somewhere in life.

Space Part One
By: Nathan Spalding
This is the first part in a now FIVE part series on space. So in the prologue last time, we talked about basically the introduction to this series. Well for this article, I want you to forget everything about that. Forget everything you think you know about space. In the beginning, there was nothing. And then suddenly, all things were created, including time itself. There are a number of ways that this could have happened. There may also be a supernatural being behind it all. Only time will tell. For the rest of this article, we will base the start of the universe as a Big Bang. As soon as time was started, the universe was expanding rapidly outward, even to this day. But this brings up several problems which will be talked about in a later article. So the universe was just created; it's in chaos and its expanding. It's really amazing to think about. The universe keeps expanding and keeps going forever, and while that's happening, stars and planets are forming. And because of the late amount of energy, space is millions of degrees hot! Instead of being cold, it's burning hot. And then suddenly the temperature drops very sharply. Now let's talk about our individual solar system. First off, no one knows how old anything is in space. All the numbers you hear are just estimates and not fact. First off, in any solar system, you need a sun. The first thing to be created in our system was the sun. Then the planets and the asteroid belts and everything else in the solar system. But the solar system is lonely out in the middle of nowhere. We don't know the center of the universe, but we could be immensely far from the center. In our galaxy, we are far away from other stars and planets. But even our galaxy is far, far, far away from anyone else. Maybe the Star Wars films just take place in our closet galaxy-neighbor. Basically after the creation of our solar system, we were in complete chaos. According to the chaos theory, there were hundreds of planets in our solar systems and they had no orbit, so they were colliding which each other constantly. They would shatter into millions of pieces. Then eventually, the eight planets came out of it, and started an orbit around the sun. The chaos theory says that parts of the planets could have helped form the ones that we know today, the asteroid belt, and many other landmarks in the solar system. Another thing about the planets: there are more than just eight in our solar system. Some people think that the solar system is just the sun and the eight planets plus Pluto. Others remember the all important asteroid belt. But really, there are lots of "dwarf" planets in the solar system, including a recent one that was beyond Pluto. This ends this article. I'm sorry that I could not go into much depth because this is an article, not a book.What's in the next article?In the next article, we will focus on the astonishing black holes. They define almost every law of physics, but are a thing that scientists know very little about.

Titanic II: Will It Sink Or Swim?
By Hannah Rosser
Just recently, an Australian man named Clive Palmer released blueprint ideas for a replica of the (deemed) 'unsinkable' ship Titanic. The completion of the sequel ship will be in 2016, and its maiden voyage will be of the same year, also starting from Southampton and ending in New York – exactly where its mother ship was going to land! Palmer is building the Titanic II as an advertising item for his company Blue Star Line.
The Titanic II has new innovations added onto it that weren't present on the first ship, such as stabilized beams for sturdiness, a welded hull (not riveted), and an extra safety deck, where the lifeboats are located. Luckily, there are enough lifeboats for all of the 2600 passengers.
If you'd want a cabin on its maiden voyage, you'd unfortunately have to cough up a million dollars first. But, if you manage to save a spot on the Titanic II for yourself, old-fashioned early 1900s clothes await you inside. If you don't feel like playing along with the crew, you can wear your One Direction t-shirt and your shorty-shorts just the same.
Deltamarin is the name of the company that is going to actually build the sequel ship. The company's director, Markku Kanerva, has stated that the Titanic II “will be the absolutely most safe cruise ship in the world upon completion”.
Ho hum, the Titanic was deemed unsinkable.

Space Race to mars
By Robert Malizia
As of 2012, there was only one private company called Mars One, but now in 2013, yet another company has planned to go to mars by 2018 beating Mars One’s plan of getting there by 2023. From an unknown launch site, why are they doing this? To be the first company to go send a human to Mars by rocket is a large feat.
There are two different companies that have decided to send someone to Mars. The first on was Mars One in 2012, the second company Inspiration Mars Foundation was officially announced in 2013; both of which consist of more than 25 people.
The objective of both companies (Mars One and IMF) is to send a human(s) to the planet of Mars. If they manage to do this then they would be the first company to land a human on Mars, which is why it is a 'space race'.
The launch site for the mission to Mars has not been decided yet for either company, but if it were up to me, I wound do it at the launch center in the middle of NASA because that is where we won the space race to the moon against Russia.
Mars One is planning to make its Mars exploration in the year of 2023, while IMF is planning on landing on mars in the year of 2018, however, these are just numbers, so it could be off by a couple of years.
The reason that these small companies are doing this is because NASA is no longer funded by our taxes; due to this the largest space Exploration Company in the USA cannot afford to send someone to the moon. They are doing this to continue space exploration in the United States, and to keep curiosity in the minds of most Americans.
Both companies have different ways of recruiting people to go to Mars. Mars One has planned to have a game show to decide which group of people will go to Mars; it will air on television for the world to see. IMF has already chose a married couple that will fly up to Mars.
Who knew that two small companies would plan a big exploration for mankind?

150 ft. asteroid heading towards Earth! But not to hit us...
photo credit businessinsider.com
By Ethan Milford
Next week, a 150 foot asteroid is going to come remarkably close to Earth! It will be the closest out of any other asteroid coming near us! So on February 15th, go outside with your lawn chair, and play the waiting game.
"No Earth impact is possible," Donald Yeomans, manager of NASA's Near-Earth Object program at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California said. Even the chances of it hitting the space satellite are very slim. "No one has raised a red flag, nor will they," Yeomans told reporters. "I certainly don't anticipate any problems whatsoever."
Even if the asteroid did hit the earth, the impact would release energy so powerful, it could destroy up to 750 square miles! Just like the dinosaurs, the asteroid would destroy a large number of humans and wildlife. But when that asteroid does fly by, it will come at a speed of over 17,000 miles per hour! Scientists are preparing to take as many photographs as possible. Although the asteroid is barely visible to the naked eye, scientists are going to use cameras from space and special, high tech cameras from earth to take the photos.
Personally, I think this could be quite the show you don’t want to miss! It’s not the often we get to see an asteroid up close! Sure, you have your comets, your shooting stars, and even your UFOs at times. But an asteroid, it is extremely rare to see one this close to Earth! I would not want to miss that! So remember, on the 15th, don’t miss the probable once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see an asteroid up close to Earth! I know I’m not gonna miss it!

Five year old boy blinded by bright light
By Noah Chase
A five year old boy named Leo Hake has to wear prescription sunglasses all the time. The reason Leo has to wear them is because of a rare disorder called Joubert Syndrome, and even with them, Leo can only see a mere three feet in front of him. He got it because his cerebellum is underdeveloped. This can also effect his kidneys, and will eventually lead to kidney failure. At five weeks old, his mom would talk to him and he would smile but look in the wrong direction. After numerous test done on Leo the doctors had found that Leo could be blind. When Leo and his mother moved back to New England, they had found after many other tests that he had the disorder.
After finding out this tragic thing, his mother started the VisKid foundation to raise money to invest in finding a cure. Although Leo can't see without his glasses and how it really hurts to not have them on, he likes to wear his shades. Leo says he knows he is different, but he can't quite understand his condition. When people ask him why he always wears his shades, he simply replies that they're his magic glasses to help him see. When Leo goes to school the kids think he is cool and love him. What would you do in this situation as his mom or as him?

Couple arrested for trying to help animal

A loving couple tries to help a Fawn heal and face getting arrested and fined in Indiana, USA on the 31st of January, for illegally holding a white-tailed deer and are now facing court.
Jeff and Jennifer Counceller were two simple lovebirds that were trying to help Dani the white-tailed fawn heal as she was very injured and close to dying a very tragic and painful death.
Dani the dear had a very big flesh wound on her hind legs from a vicious, unknown, animal attack that would have slowly killed her in a painful death but then the Councellers saved her and treated her for two years then someone told the cops. The Councellers were then forced to court where they could face a 2 month jail penalty and a 500 dollar fine for doing the right thing.
The courthouse, which is located in Indiana, USA will host the judge that will decide the fate of the family on January 31, 2013. The Councellers are charged with illegally holding a white-tailed fawn, it is illegal because they were not permitted by the government to own the deer Dani. The penalty can be at most a 60 day arrest and a $500.00 fine.
This shows why you should not go against the law to do the right thing, because the law is unfair.

2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray

On 1/16/43, the original Corvette was unveiled in New York, and changed the world of cars forever. The bad economy started a fall in the sales of the Corvette in 2008 to 2012. Chevy plans to get car buyers excited and revive the former glory of the Corvette with the new Stingray. It is the most powerful standard model ever designed and engineers worked on it for months.
Because of Chevy's sales troubles in the past few years, the owner decided that unveiling a new Corvette could help boost sales. The new Corvette Stingray is the most powerful Corvette, going 0 to 60 in less then 4 seconds. Not only is the Stingray the most powerful Corvette, it is also the most fuel efficient; a rare accomplishment for any car. It was unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show 60 years after the original Corvette was in New York. The new Corvette Stingray's body design is similar to the recent models, but it has several accents and differences that just make it a juggernaut in Chevy's line-up.
It has a 6.2 liter V8 engine that cranks out 450 horsepower so it can dominate the road. With it's 450 foot pounds of torque, it is definitely living up to the other Corvettes. It can achieve 1g in cornering grip while exceeding the 26 miles-to-the-gallon of the previous Corvette model. In my opinion, this is the best Corvette that Chevy has made yet, and I believe it will be one of the cars people look back on and you can't deny the coolness. I hope they lower the driving age, so I can buy the new 2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray.

Warren City schools bomb threat
By Cade Galloway
There was a bomb threat at a Warren City School on Thursday, January 17th. The school was McGuffey K-8 on Tod Avenue in Warren, Ohio. All of the kids in the school were told to leave their back packs at home on that date in response to a bomb threat the school district found on Wednesday.
School officials found a note on a computer saying that there would be a bomb at McGuffey K-8 school on Tod Avenue Northwest, on January 17th. The Warren City police were scheduled to be at the school on that date searching the students when they came into the building. The police and a bomb dog searched the school but nothing was found. A student who did bring a back pack was not sent home, but the police did check it though. Aaron Schwab is a communications coordinator for the school. He said that he'd never thought this would happen.
man hit by car on purpose?
By Bethany Matheney
Sixty-one year old Sunday School teacher Johnny Lee Butts took on on his usual walking routine early on a July day in 2012 in the state Mississippi, not expecting anything horrible to happen that day, but he was wrong. An unsuspecting Johnny started walking the route he always took, not knowing there was a drunken teenager driving down the road that had been drinking vodka and smoking marijuana all night long. The driver saw Johnny walking on the complete opposite side of the road, and it was clear he was a black man. One of the passengers told the driver to watch out for Johnny, but the drunken driver didn't listen. He swerved and smashed right into him, knocking him 172 feet away from where the car made impact with his body. One of the passengers, Tony Hopper Jr. clearly stated “Yes sir, I do.”, when the deputy of their police department asked him if he thinks Matthew Whitten(the driver), hit Johnny on purpose. FBI are still working on this unclosed conspiracy case of whether Matthew Whitten hit Johnny on purpose. Most people do, but do your think he hit Johnny because of his African American Heritage?

Subway: are you getting all 12 inches?
By Ethan Milford
What's in an inch? Apparently, enough to make people go into chaos. Subway, the largest fast food chain in the world, is being criticized around the world after a man from Australia posted a photo on the company's Facebook page that shows the sandwich being only 11 inches. The original photo was removed Thursday, but I managed to get it.
Anyway, the photo has been liked by over 100,000 people. After that photo was posted, a lot of other look-a-like pictures showed up showing the 11 inch footlong. But many people's opinion's are different. Some have said that people should “chill out.” Others have said they were switching to other sub restaurants.
“The length of out sandwich may vary because of the bread, because it's not made to our exact specifications,” Said many Subway managers. A team of investigators from The New York Post went to a local Subway and measured 7 footlongs. Only 4 out of the 7 reached its 12 inch point.
“I've never seen so many people in an uproar over an inch. Wow,” read one Facebook post. “Lets all head to McDonald's and weigh a Quarter Pounder,” read another post.
But this is just the latest in the string of public criticism of fast food restaurants. There have been photos of Burger King, Domino's, and KitchenAid. All have gone viral, all have passed. But this photo break the ice for January 2013.
So the next time you go to Subway to order a footlong, make sure to bring your measuring tape.

dudeism

Yes, there is a new religion called Dudeism. At least, new to us. Dudeism is an ancient philosophy that preaches non-preachiness, practices as little as possible, and above all, uh… lost my train of thought there. One of the students in STEM introduced the class to Dudeism just a month ago. One of the converted students describes Dudeism as ‘a religion where you have long hair and eat sandwiches with your feet’. It has changed student’s lives, and many have converted to it. The student who introduced Dudeism says you either have to wear a cool bracelet, wear a cool hat, or have long hair in order to practice Dudeism. You also cannot get hostile. EVER! Unless it’s necessary. You always have to be cool about everything, and always have an expressionless face. Many students have converted and are spreading the word about Dudeism. Soon it will be one of the greatest religions in the world. Anyway, if you want to find goodwill and peace, man, I’ll be glad to help you. Right after a nap…

Animals getting smarter
By Paul Proctor
Well the other day I was out and this is what I saw. I saw a little Squirrel, and I was confused and trying very hard to see where he was storing food for the winter. So I discovered that the squirrel had a piece of plastic covering the hole to his nuts that he was storing, and man was I shocked when I watched him climb the tree and move the plastic covering to put more food in. He then reset the plastic back into place over the hole. He later went to pick up some dry corn leaves to eat, and it made me think a little squirrel was doing such amazing things for the his survival little by little. I want the world to know that animals are getting smarter. A week ago, there was a chipmunk and it was looking for food. So, I laid some peanuts out for him (still in the shell) and about an hour later the empty shells were back on my porch! Animals are getting very intelligent and deserve more respect. Go animals!

couches containing chemicals increase risk of cancer

Eight out of ten couches have a flame retardant chemical, which is a fire safety chemical, that can increase the risk of cancer to a person. A study shows that the number of couches with the chemical in it has increased. It increased from 75% to 93% in the last seven years. Many researchers collected samples of foam from couches and almost all of them had a flame retardant chemical in them. Some of the couches even had a chemical called Tris phosphate which is one of the sixty five chemicals known to cause cancer in 2011.

Black Friday
By Bryce Hall
I think that Black Friday is a good and bad thing because well you can get what you want because it is going to be cheap but the worse part is waiting in long line at midnight and being out at stores till sometimes 6 AM. Some people are just crazy on Black Friday, and some people are crazy just to be in those lines because well someone might pepper spray you or you might fight someone for something you both want. I think you are better off just to stay home and relax and not get in a fight or get pepper sprayed. I know that sometimes it is worth it for such good deals, but let's think really most of the time it is never worth it because you might never get what you want and you will go home all mad.

Recent Bigfoot Sightings Question Residents
by Ethan Milford
The Bigfoot: A large, hairy man claimed to walk on two legs, like a man. There have been recent sightings in Ohio, some even in Trumbull and Mahoning counties! There have been sightings reporting a large, man-like creature that walks on two legs, weighing about 600 pounds and standing at about 7' 9". Some people believe in the Bigfoot, others deny that fact. It's come to question residents about its existence. But, my grandfather, Skip Brady, says he witnessed it from his front yard! This incident occurred in Vienna, Ohio in 2007. My grandfather was sitting on his couch at around midnight, when his sensor light turned on. He looked outside and saw a what he claimed to be a big, hairy beast, about seven feet tall! He immediately called 911, but the creature had run off. While talking, the creature came back, and he got a good glance at the beast. He took a picture of it and this is what came out.
When the police showed up, they searched around the yard and found a footprint that was about 14 inches long! They soaked it in clay and got this.
Now there is questioning in Ohio about the call, the picture, and the casting, but I'd say he has all of the evidence he needs to say Bigfoot exists!
